Location

For our promo we would like to use a street scene because it will work well with the lyrics. Lyrics like 'no reason' can give meaning that he doesnt know what to do or where to go as he has questions but no answers. Having people on the street and around the acters will show him lonely and keep the focus on him at all times. Also this has come from inspiration from 'The Verves' song 'bitter sweet symphony' where he is walking down the street by himself bumping into people with no one around him liking or taking notice of him.

Lead singer walking down the street buming into people not caring why or who they are. Walking by himself will highlight the lyrics more.

close up of the lead singer performing as he walks down the street. his facial expressions are plain and bleak with no real happiness on  his face, this is what we would like in our promo as our lyrics are sad and fairly dark, but have an upbeat tempo whihc will suit a fast walk down a street.

the empty stage represetnts no one to listen or to care like the lyrics 'no reason' or for no one to come to watch the performance. The lyric 'dont you dare' sounds like anger or frustration within an arguement, like hes argued with his love and now has no reason to care about much anymore. Thats the reason behind the empty stage he doesnt care and theres no reason to have anyone watch him perform. the lighting will be facing the perfromers from both the front and the back.

video analysis

21st of may saw the release of the single 'sticks and stones', the video was almost entirely shot in Wimbeldon a suburb in london, which is Jamie T's home town. It features himself and other band members. The styling in the video (right) is something we want to use, its a casual indie look.

The clown normally represents happiness or laughter. But in this shot both are looking angry and straight faced with no expressions. the mise-en-scene is anger, urban youth, the shot looks like a war scene which is another take on youth life like its a battle field, only the strongest wins.

Brining in theory

Lyrics: establish a general feeling / mood / sense of subject rather than meeting.
Music: tempo often drives the editing.
Genre: reflected in types of mise-en-scene, themes,
Intertexuality: not all audiences will spot reference, which would no significantly detract from their pleasure in the text itself, but greater pleasure might be derived by those who recognise the reference and feel flattered by this. It also increases the audience’s engagement with, and attentiveness to the product. Many music videos draw upon cinema and other areas of popular culture.

Steve archer’s theory
  • There needs to be a strong and coherent relationship between  narrative and performance and music promos
  • Music videos will cut between a narrative and a performance of the song by the bamd.

John Stewart’s theory
·        The music video has the aesthetics of a TV commercial, with lots of close ups and lighting being used to focus on the stars face.
·        Visual references comes from a range of sources, most frequently cinema, fashion and art photography
·        The video allows more access to the performer than a stage performance can.

Sigmund Freud’s theory
  • Voyeurism – refers to the notion that erotic pleasure may be gained by looking at a sexual object (preferably when the object is unaware of being watched).

Laura Mulvey’s theory
  • Because filmmakers are predominantly male, the presence of women in films is often solely for the purpose of display.

Connection – gives organisation/ coherence to a series of facts/ images – we look for a beginning / middle /end

Traditional narrative structure; beginning / middle / end

Roland Barthes
  • Enigma code – refers to any element that is not explained and , therefore, exists as an enigma, raising questions that demand explanation. Most texts hold back details in order to increase the effect of the final revelation of all truths
  • Action code – refers to the other major structuring principle that builds interest or suspense on the part of an audience. The action code applies to any action that implies a further narrative end.

Tzvetan todorov
  • Believes narratives begin with equilibrium (harmony), then move to disequilibrium (disharmony) until a new equilibrium is resorted by the end.

The Nites

The story of The Nites begins back in 2003, when a barman named Ant met a cleaner named Mike. One day, Anthony came home from work to get ready for a gig that night and found Mike cleaning his apartment. Back then Mike worked for a cleaning company that cleaned Anthony's apartment once a week. Mike had been asked to fill in that day for a sick member of staff and visited Anthony's apartment for the first time. They acknowledged each other briefly before Anthony went to get ready. Shortly after, he heard music coming from the lounge and went out to discover Mike singing a song on his beloved vintage Martin guitar that his uncle left him. But he soon forgot all about this when he tuned into what Mike was playing. After finding out it was one of his own tracks they instantly geled. After talking about their styles and influences and getting to know each other, they started writing the very next day and after 3 years of hard work enlisted the help of Craig Powell, head of the Songmaker Group, who instantly saw their talent and song writing capabilities. Currently in the recording studio laying down their debut album, so expect good things from The Nites in the future.

Lyrics to - No reason by the nites
Intro (instrumental)

I need a last show, yeah I wanna see the sun
Don’t wanna let it pass, don’t wanna walk when I can run
So many times I tried, and many times been wrong
Still everytime I tell myself, don’t you dare
Sell yourself a line your nothing more

And the face you wear, theres no reason why
It’s the way things fall
In a world full of questions
Don’t have to ask them all
You Just got to let it go sometimes, sometimes

Theres no reason here, that I can find
And im done with searching
Wanna close my eyes
Just gotta let it go sometimes, sometimes

I read the wrong book, I didn’t see the signs
I took a right hook, in old classical style
I took everything they had, still look them in the eyes

And everytime I tell myself
Don’t you dare
Sell yourself a line your nothing more

And the face you wear, theres no reason why
It’s the way things fall
In a world full of questions
Don’t have to ask them all
You Just got to let it go sometimes, sometimes

Theres no reason here, that I can find
And im done with searching
Wanna close my eyes
Just gotta let it go sometimes, sometimes

Talking in circles through the night
Im trying to find that something real, and right
Im chasing your shadows everywhere
For what its worth and how it feels

Theres no reason why
It’s the way things fall
In a world full of questions
Don’t have to ask them all
You Just got to let it go sometimes, sometimes
Theres no reason here, that I can find
And im done with searching
Wanna close my eyes
You just gotta let it go sometimes, sometimes

The lyrics can suggest the song is about a lost love or someone who has question but can't get no answers to explain how he feels. He also sounds like he has done something  wrong 'I took everything they had, still look them in the eyes' hes taken something from a loved on but he/she doesnt know that he has taken something from them. 'No reason' is used alot in the song and suggests He has given up on caring or caring about someone he onced loved.

Music promo

A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Music videos are used primarily for marketing purposes to promote the sale of the artist. music came into prominence in the 80's when MTV based their format around the medium. Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, an non-narrative approaches such as abstract films. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected.

Above is a still image from 'Mumford and sons' this have given me inspiration for styling in the music promo. the wind is used in the video because the song is called 'winter winds' the song reflects them as a band through the hard times they have been through individually and as a collective, its a warming song that people can relate to. the melody and rythm is up beat and gets quicker as the song progresses towards the end. Their music style is folk music with a indie/bluegrass twist making them an unusual band but very nice to listen to. the video is unusual as it just shows the band members like the song only tells a story of what they have been through during their own lives but us as an audience watching can relate to the music and video. Their style in the video reflects their genre also the folk music and indie look is very much apart of their styling especially in this video e.g. top buttons done up, waist coat and dark brown clothing with a fitted style. Many and most of 'Mumford and sons' songs are literary based with influences from Shakespeare and Macbeth also using words from John Steinbecks novels 'Of mice and men' ect...
